Congressman Mitchell statement on Ontario Power Generation's nuclear waste plans

Congressman Paul Mitchell (MI-10) released the following statement after Ontario Power Generation (OPG) announced it no longer plans to store nuclear waste near Lake Huron:

"It is welcomed news OPG finally halted their plans to build a nuclear waste dump on the shore of Lake Huron. Stopping construction on this irresponsible project has been a priority of mine since I first came to Congress.

I have worked with my Michigan colleagues to urge both Canadian and American officials to stop this proposal -- sending numerous letters to the American and Canadian governments, meeting with the Canadian Ambassador to voice my concerns, and authoring an amendment that required the U.S. State Department to inform Congress what steps it would take to oppose the project.

I thank the Saugeen Ojibway Nation for their vote opposing this misguided effort and their commitment to protecting the Great Lakes. I will continue to fight to protect the Great Lakes as long as I serve in Congress."
